Arup appointed sustainability consultant for COP26

The UK Government has selected Arup as their sustainability consultant to help deliver the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26).

COP26 is set to be hosted by the UK Government and take place in November 2021 in Glasgow.

In order to help achieve its ambition of delivering a sustainable summit, the UK Government has enlisted the help of engineering, design and consultancy firm Arup.

Arup, in partnership with Crowberry Consulting, will advise the government on all aspects of sustainability, including developing a Carbon Management Plan to build a sustainable supply chain.

Jonathan Ben-Ami, Sustainability Director at Arup, said that they will be “working closely with the FCO and Cabinet Office to help them achieve their aim of making COP26 in Glasgow a sustainable and carbon neutral event.”

The consultancy firm will be assessing COP26’s energy consumption, travel emissions, catering, waste and transportation to help achieve the ISO Sustainable Events Management Standard as well as delivering a carbon-natural conference with sustainability at its core.

Specialists leading the job include carbon consultants, transport planners, waste experts and sustainable supply chain specialists from Arup’s Glasgow and London.

Ben-Ami, said that Arup’s aim was to “also leave a positive long-team legacy for the UK and Glasgow”.

Becky Toal, Managing Director at Crowberry Consulting, said: “Our specialist knowledge and expertise of this standard will support FCO and Cabinet Office to achieve a world-class and sustainable event.”

This comes as Arup’s Glasgow base has been working on the SSE Hydro and the redevelopment of Glasgow Queen Street Station, as well as working with Zero Waste Scotland to support Scottish local authorities to develop net zero carbon plans.
