NatureWorks, maker of the market-leading Ingeo™ biopolymer from plants, not oil, confirms its commitment to innovation and sustainability by partnering for the third time with Climate Action for the upcoming United Nations Conference of Parties (COP 17) that will be held in Durban, South Africa, Nov. 28-Dec. 9, 2011.
The goal of the COP annual initiative is to reduce global CO2 emissions, an objective that NatureWorks has been actively working on for more than ten years with its partner brands through the utilization of plastic made from renewable plant materials, not fossil carbon. NatureWorks and brand partners are supporting Climate Action’s reception at COP 17 on December 7, a networking opportunity designed to create synergy among conference attendees and others – all of whom are committed to supporting industry and governments make more sustainable choices. At the reception a special COP 17 NatureWorks LookBook will be available which details how Brand Owners are lowering environmental impacts through the use of a plastic made from plants. Speaking at the reception will be United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) Executive Director and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Achim Steiner.
Many global brands committed to developing better products for their consumers have launched Ingeo-made products, including Bioserie, Electrolux, Elements Naturals, Earth’s Best, Henkel, Stonyfield and Target.
Through their products these global brands contribute to CO2 reduction and, by supporting international events such as the Climate Action panel discussion and reception at COP-17, they contribute to greater visibility for the issue, credibility for sustainable product innovation, and innovative and sustainable business practices.
“Our partner brands have brought to market compelling consumer products that are both highly performing and sustainable,” said Steve Davies, director of corporate communications and public affairs, NatureWorks. “Reducing CO2 emissions by using renewable materials in everyday products gives each of us as consumers the ability to make a better choice for the environment and the future.”
NatureWorks has recently attracted investment from leading Thai company PTT Chemical, which will allow NatureWorks to continue its aggressive growth internationally and supports the company’s intent to begin construction of its next state-of-the-art Ingeo manufacturing facility, to be located in Thailand. The facility will allow NatureWorks to fulfill projected bioplastics global demand, which is growing at a yearly rate of 20-30 percent, expand its product portfolio, and increase its contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.
