Ahead of the Virtual Edition of the Sustainable Investment Forum Europe 2020, a 4-Part Digital Event Series starting from 8 September, we caught up with Eva Cairns, Senior ESG Investment Analyst – Climate Change at Aberdeen Standard Investments, to discuss investing in a changing climate and the implications for investors.

Q. How can climate change risks be fully understood and integrated into the decision making?

The first step is to do the relevant research to understand an economy’s or company’s exposure to climate    change. Understanding a company’s strategy and risk assessment is the first step. In addition, a carbon footprint analysis is useful for understanding exposure to transition risks, for example from increase carbon pricing and emission trends over time. This needs to be complemented with more forward looking data and engagement which is critical to get some insight into how companies are managing their exposure to climate change risks and opportunities. It is important to recognise those truly embracing the transition as they are likely to be the winners in the long-term and clearly outline our expectations to influence those that are not taking leading steps.
