The Thai automotive company Yarnyon Group, is introducing fully electric motorcycles to Thailand and the move could significantly reduce traffic related carbon emissions in the country.

BV Moto, a subsidiary of Thai Yarnyon, was appointed the official importer and retailer of Zero motorcycles from the U.S. in 2014.

Zero was showcased in Thailand for the first time at the Thailand International Motor Expo in December, and visitors tested the electric motorcycles.

Three sports models are being offered with prices ranging from Bt690,000 (£14,000) to Bt870,000 (£17,600) along with three motocross models priced from Bt630,000 (£12,700) to Bt780,000 (£15,807).

Baromkroch Leenutaphong, vice president of Thai Yarnyon, said: “We plan to introduce an additional model this year and sell a total of 30 units this year. The highlight of Zero motorcycles is the instantaneous torque delivery as well as ease of maintenance. Apart from charging from normal home AC outlets, the battery can also be removed and charged independently.”

With a cost of Bt20-40 (£0.40-£0.80) for each full charge, the Zero can travel from 113km to 243km depending on the models the battery size.

The batteries have a 5-year warranty and free maintenance for five years is also being offered.

Baromkroch said: “This is a long-term investment for us and although it may take many years, in five to 10 years more automobiles and motorcycles will be electrically powered. After Tesla introduced its electric car, major automakers like Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are also becoming highly interested in this type of vehicle. Meanwhile, more and more electric motorcycle concepts are being shown around the world and production is expected to commence in the near future. In future, more Thai consumers will start using electric motorcycles just like people all around the world.”
