A company owned by US presidential candidate Donald Trump has been fined by the UK’s Environment Agency for breaking carbon emissions rules.
The penalty is for a flight to the UK in relation to a plane owned by DJT Operations, a part of the Trump Organization.
According to media reports, the fine is for £1,610 ($2,347) and comes under the European Union’s carbon pollution emissions trading scheme (ETS).
The EU-ETS requires polluters to buy a carbon permit for every metric tonne of carbon pollution emitted, or face a $109 per metric tonne fine.
Trump, wh is running as a US presidential candidate, has been quoted as saying that climate change was “created by and for the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive.”
The Environment Agency is charged with enforcing the ETS and published an updated list of those facing fines on Tuesday.
The agency announced newly issued fines for 25 operators, totalling more than £750,000 ($1.1 million) for failing to obtain carbon permits to cover their emissions.
Other operators to be fined include the Bahrain Royal family, insurance giant AIG and 21st Century Fox America.
Liz Parkes, Environment Agency deputy director of climate change and business services, said: “The EU Emissions Trading System is an important means of regulating emissions from aviation operators…The Environment Agency’s enforcement activity is part of coordinated action across Europe.”
