Tesla to release patents for electric vehicle industry
CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, announces plans to release tech patents to be used by other manufacturers without the risk of being sued in bid to boost sustainable transport industry
The CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, has announced plans to release technological patents so the company expands the electric car industry.
The electric car manufacturer will allow hundreds of patents to be used by other manufacturers without the risk of being sued.
Musk said that there are not enough carmakers making “serious” electric cars and the patents could offer a solution to the problem.
Musk said: “Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport. If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal.”
Although Tesla’s increasing sales highlight the obvious potential in the industry, Musk seemed adamant that the industry is in need of a boost if it is to compete with traditional vehicles.
Musk has met with BMW to discuss the use of Tesla’s supercharged recharging mechanisms for its recently released hybrid and electric models.
Hybrid and electric vehicles are now being developed by all major car companies and the electric car industry has been significantly growing in recent years.
Three sites have been proposed for Musk’s US$5 billion battery factories where sustainable energy will be generated for cars in a move that could pave the way for other companies to follow Tesla’s lead.
