Pakistan’s Majlis-e-Shoora parliament building in Islamabad has become the first in the world to be 100 per cent powered by clean energy.

The buildings electricity is now being covered by renewables following the completion of a 1 megawatt solar photovoltaic rooftop project.

The new rooftop solar PV application is connected directly to the building’s power supply, giving the building energy security in relation to power shortages and grid supply issues.

The project has cost a total of $53 million and feeds the unused electricity back into the national grid.

Pakistan’s special secretary at the National Assembly, Munawar Abbas Shah, said: “This is the first project of its kind in a public building in Pakistan, and later more public buildings will be converted to solar power to overcome the energy crisis.”

The new system is expected to save the government around $1 million per year on electricity costs.
