Dunkin’ Donuts to remove all foam cups within two years

Submerging your sugary-based treats in coffee has just been made easier and more sustainable.

American food and drink retailer, Dunkin’ Donuts, has announced plans to eliminate all polystyrene foam cups across its global operations from spring this year. The company will start rolling out the changes in New York and California; it is targeting 2020 to complete a move which will prevent an estimated one billion foam cups from being wasted.

The use of foam cups has been widely criticised as they are both non-recyclable and dangerous to human health. Exposure to styrene has been cited as possibly carcinogenic to humans.

The announcement is the result of years of work to find a replacement to foam which was affordable, convenient and environmentally friendly. Instead, double-walled paper cups will be used, with paperboard certified by the NGO Sustainable Forestry Initiative.

Karen Raskopf, Chief Communications and Sustainability Officer, Dunkin’ Brands, “Our decision to eliminate foam cups is significant for both our brand and our industry. We have a responsibility to improve our packaging, making it better for the planet while still meeting the needs of our guests”.

The move will help the company meet its goal of making 80 percent of its fibre-packaging sustainable before the end of 2018. Dunkin’ Donuts has been an early adopter and leader in this field for over a decade. The company has launched various programmes to ensure sustainability is incorporated into its coffee-making, supply chain and buildings. It has previously introduced 100 percent recycled paper to its products, and ensures its restaurants meet energy efficiency standards.

Ms Raskopf added: “Transitioning away from foam has been a critical goal for Dunkin’ Donuts US., and with the double-walled cup, we will be able to offer a replacement that meets the needs and expectations of both our customers and the communities we serve”.
